Africa-1 Submarine Cable System Prepares to be Constructed

Recently, MTN Telecom Company, PCCW International, Saudi Telecom, Egypt Telecom Company and Telkom signed a cooperation agreement, which planned to jointly build a submarine cable system--Africa- 1 connecting Africa, Middle East and South Asia and even Europe.

Africa No. 1 submarine cable system will use at least three pairs of optical fiber, 100G technology for laying, with a total length of over 12,000 kilometers, and extend along the East African coastline to Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Pakistan, as well as the construction of 5000 km feeder connections to other countries.

Saudi Telecom Company executive, Dr Homoud M Alkussayer, said, "Africa is a very important emerging market, and its social and economic development has created a huge opportunity for the telecommunications industry. We are honored to participate in Africa-1 undersea fiber optic cable construction."

Gadallah Tamer, chief executive of Egypt Telecom, said: "the bandwidth market in Africa is more promising than many other regions. African continent's international bandwidth demand is huge, and the construction of the Africa-1 submarine cable system will help to improve the competitiveness of the African market."

According to the plan, in June this year, the agreement of Africa-1 submarine cable system’s construction and maintenance is expected to be signed, and would be put into use in the third quarter of 2017.
