Recently, Indonesia has won 600 million pounds (about 5.8 billion yuan) loans to upgrade the power system.

The loan would support the main distribution upgrade of Indonesia's Sumatra Island, including the consolidation of 150 kV transmission line, expansion of substations, AND installation of new and upgraded equipment.

The Asian Development Bank granted loan to the Indonesian state-owned electricity company to implement the project.

Power System Upgrade Project was designed to help achieve Sumatra’s electrification rate of 90%, till 2019 and support for overall government targets of universal power connection in 2024. The current national electricity connection rate was about 84%.

Rehan Kausar, Southeast Asian Development Bank project manager, said: "Indonesia's power sector has been expanding, but still can not keep up with growing demand."
